Ayurveda- A Complete Science of Life

Ayurveda literally means "science of life and longevity." and is considered to be the traditional system of medicine of India. It is the oldest health care system in the world.  Ayurveda is a science in the sense that it is a complete system. It is a qualitative, holistic science of health and longevity, a philosophy and system of healing the whole person, body and mind.

Ayurveda Tantra Origin and Principles

Ayurveda is native to Indian.  It is believed that the initial literature / text books of Ayurveda were written in India some 3,500 – 5,000 years ago (during Vedic period).

Ayurveda offers specific recommendations to each individual on lifestyle, diet, exercise and yoga, herbal therapy, and even spiritual practices to restore and maintain balance in body and mind. Ayurveda sees a strong connection between the mind and the body, a huge amount of information is available regarding this relationship.

This understanding that we are all unique individuals enables Ayurveda to address not only specific health concerns but also offers explanation as to why one person responds differently than another.

Unique Principles of Ayurveda

  1. 1Ayurveda is the life science rather than the medicinal science. It tells us how to live a happy, disease free, healthy, social life.

  2. 2Ayurveda recognizes different energetic constitution for different people. Ayurvedic regimens are according to these energetic constitutions and not the symptomatic treatment. Hence there is not the same treatment for the same outward symptoms.

  3. 3Ayurveda accepts that our life is the result of the union of mind / indriyas, body, senses / sattwa and atma / soul. It accepts mind as the independent entity. Any diseased condition affects status of mind, in turn, any disturbance in mind affects the physical condition of our body. At the treatment level, mind and body, both are considered together.

  4. 4Atma, the in-destructible power. Our body contains Jivatma, a part of Parmatma. This connects living organisms to god.

  5. 5The most important principle of ayurvedic science is there is nothing in the world which does not exist in our body. Nature and our body both have ‘panchbhautic’ configuration. Hence, with the help of nature, we can correct the imbalance of these elements in our body.

Dosha / Tridosha

  1. 1Tri (three) doshas vata, pitta and kapha are collectively called as tridoshas

  2. 2Tridoshas are the bio-energies

  3. 3The elements which make characteristic energic configuration of a person or dosha type (prakriti) are called doshas.

  4. 4Basic elements of body

Our body is made up of basic elements – dhoshas, dhatus, malas i.e. doshas are basic elements of body

  1. 1Dhoshas are that bio-energies which are responsible for specific energetic configuration.

  2. 2Doshas are that entities which become impure by their own and they become a etiologic agent for impurity of dhatus.

  3. 3Doshas are the power systems which regulate body metabolism and form healthy dhatus as for as possible. They correlate our body with environmental changes externally and mental and emotional changes internally and maintain health of our body. But if these changes become more dominant doshas become impure and cause impurity in dhatus. Imbalanced doshas thus cause diseases. In short, doshas are responsible for health and diseases.

Tridoshas and Triguna

  1. 1Three basic elements -  sattwa, raja, tama.

  2. 2Three doshas are the active parts of trigunas in the body.

  3. 3Vata represent raja guna, kapha represents tama guna and pitta represents sattwa guna in the body.

Tridosh and Panchamahabhuta

All the substances are made up of panchmahabhutas. The dominant panchmahabhut configuration of tridoshas is as follows

  1. 1Vata – Vayu (Air) + Aakash (Space)

  2. 2Pitta – Teja (Fire) + some water

  3. 3Kapha – Prithvi (Earth) + Jala (Water)

Existence of tridoshas in the body

How tridoshas exist in body?

Life originated from combination of sperm, ovum and jivatma (according to ayurveda). Tridoshas are present in sperm and ovum and hence in newly form zygote by combination of these two. They perform their function and form different parts of foetus. They keep on performing their functions after birth and until the death occurs. In other words, the life ends when tridoshas stop working.

When tridoshas from sperm and ovum enter in the zygote, their configuration decides the characteristic dosha type of a person (prakriti). It is unique for every person. It is responsible for the uniqueness of the person. The physical stature, health, immunity, mental ability, intelligence depends upon that prakriti of a person.

Function of Tridoshas (Collective)

Tridoshas in balanced state maintain the normal health of a person. If the balance between them gets damaged, they vitiate dhatus and generate many diseases. The main function of tridoshas is to regulate the physiological processes in the body.

Tridoshas in balanced state

  1. 1Normal health

  2. 2Maintain the normal physiological process

  3. 3Balanced emotional state and normal mental functions like memory, reasoning

  4. 4Normal digestion, elimination etc.

  1. 1Imbalance of tridoshas

  2. 2Vitiation of dhatus and malas

  3. 3Generation of diseases

Formation of tridoshas

Tridoshas exist in the body right from the beginning of life. After birth they are also formed by digestion of food.

Vata dosha is formed in pakwashaya (large intestine) in last stage of digestion i.e. differentiation of waste product from useful material. Vata is formed from the waste product.

Kapha dosha is formed during the formation of rasa dhatu (In the form of waste product).

Pitta dosha is formed during the formation of rakta dhatu (In the form of waste product).
